The Pristina Illyria Switch

The total area of Kosovo is around 110,000 square kilometres and total population is around 2,000,000 inhabitants. The biggest and most important cities are Pristina, Prizren, Mitrovica, Peje, Gjakova, Ferizaj and Gjilan. Before the conflict telecommunications network of Kosovo had around 160,000 users, mostly of them were connected to electromechanical systems. The telephone penetration rate was 6% and became the lowest in Europe after the conflict.
During the NATO air campaign in the territory of Kosovo, the transmission and switching systems of the fixed telecommunication infrastructure have been severely damaged. In Pristina, the main destroyed parts of the switching system are

• A transit exchange of 4500 trunks

• A local switch of 10,000 subscribers and a remote unit that had a capacity of 4,000 subscribers

• The part of the local loop located in the demolished building.

The main objective was the implementation of a new transit exchange and a local exchange, both exchanges being possible to combine into a single facility.
