SOS Children’s
Village Complex in Zanzibar
Design and implementation of a 3,5 ha large social
complex built of mined coral stone, shaped on site
and pre-cast concrete blocks made on site and used
as a lost shutter for all concrete elements. The
main design idea arrived from the floor layout of
the traditional houses which were grouped together
to form court yards. The main material is that also
used in the traditional houses and was readily available
around the island. Unguja, having a tropical climate,
all houses were designed to be naturally ventilated
through open terraces towards centrally located
court yards, an element not dissimilar to the historic
“Stone” Town of Zanzibar. The complex
is made up of two storied residential buildings,
educational facilities, commercial outlets, community
hall, administrative and service centre and vocational
training. All works were completed without the aid
of sophisticated machinery or specially skilled
artisans.
