After his structural engineering training in Vienna
in 1980, Norbert Bauer worked initially in an architectural
office funded by the Municipality of Vienna within
a team of well known architects (Schuster, Holubowsky,
Kleindienst) developing Town Regeneration Plans
for districts within the inner belt road of Vienna
which was later adopted by the municipality and
assisted to modernize the city. Here he got into
contact with the early trials with CAD and used
his applied knowledge towards improving AUTOCAD
for architectural applications in the German language,
which had initially been developed by AUTODESK for
general designing. He could assist in making AUTOCAD
user friendlier and developed micros for tablet
and menu entries to help computer illiterate to
work on desktop computers doing computer aided design
(CAD). In his 24 years of professional experience
as architect Norbert Bauer has designed and supervised
the building of numerous residential building blocks
in Vienna but also industrial plants in the middle
East funded by an Austrian industrialist. Norbert
Bauer joint forces with the author to register the
architectural design and management company 3D
design-development-display, Barnert, Bauer OEG,
in 1991 under which name numerous construction projects
have been implemented in Eastern Africa, some of
which were funded by the Aga Khan Development Network
(www.akdn.org
). After leaving this part of the world, he concentrate
his activities in Austria to implement affordable
residential housing and also took on a training
post at the Academy for Arts of Vienna teaching
CAD in the Institute of Wilhelm Holzbauer, Zvi Hecker
und Zaha M. Hadid. Norbert Bauer today manages his
own design office in Vienna and cooperates with
other well known architectural offices of:
